Friends can help each other. A true friend is someone who lets you have total freedom to be yourself - and especially to feel. Or, not feel. Whatever you happen to be feeling at the moment is fine with them. That's what real love amounts to - letting a person be what he really is.

Jim Morrison

Another week done, and as the Mets announcer says, "Put it in the books."  The week has been bittersweet for me.  Good byes were said to a co-worker while I sit back and ponder my own retirement.  I've suddenly become the old lady of the office. My nearest co-worker in age is 20 years younger than me. I wonder, how did this happen?  How did the years pass by so quickly and how long do I want to continue being the old lady of the office?

Things have been coming to a head for me lately.  Health issues are making me ponder my future.  Finally ready to admit I am a senior, I downloaded the application from the MTA to apply for half-priced fare as a senior. Next, I will be applying to Medicare.  I've joined a program called NY Access.  It's a plan for seniors which helps one find which programs they are eligible for.  There is one which helps alleviate extreme rent increases.  That's something I really have to look into.

As it is a non-cooking weekend, I plan to do a little shopping for myself.  After a quick trip to the bank in my old neighborhood, I'm going to head on over to my favorite store and see what I can get. Here in New York City it's the last of the week long tax free shopping break, so I definitely plan to take advantage of it. It's not everyday the city gives you such a break.

Otherwise, I've got some reading I'd like to catch up on and I could definitely use some extra sleep.  The work week wears me down like it never did before.

Wishing you all a relaxing weekend. Be happy and enjoy what you plan to do.

  1. Great Jim Morrison quote - so true.

I agree with you. It's amazing how your energy level drops as you age. Of course it doesn't help that we have to work longer than we ever have. You're smart to take advantage of every opportunity and discount available for people of your age. I know I will. Since I have never been "on the system" I will feel no guilt whatsoever - paid into it for years so why not?

I am the second oldest in my workplace. It's so funny - they don't understand when I make comments about pop culture of my time.

    those young whipper snappers.....

  2. Shopping, reading and napping! Three great things on your "to do" list. Enjoy the weekend. Don't call yourself the "old lady" of the office. You have experience, maturity and the right to be who you are...a divine woman of intelligence, depth and compassion.

  3. Mary, look at all the people who come here on a daily basis just to read what you think and what you have to say. People like you just the way you are, so don't even think of changing one little bitsy.

We love you just the way you are, girl.
In my office there is one other gal older than myself, but I rarely see her because she works less hours than I do.

Tiz true, I cannot do what I used to do but I can say one thing, I always do the best job I absolutely can...

    Always have.

Have a great weekend filled with love and joy.

hugs and love and blessings Sharon

  4. Yes, Mary, if you've reached the magic age of the "senior discount," make sure you cash in for every available goodie and price break -- you've earned it by a lifetime of labour!

  5. In other cultures your age and maturity would be honored. In our culture, not so much which is why it's so important you celebrate yourself, aches, pains and all. And I agree with others that getting as much as you can (because we know you're honest) because you're considered a senior is very important. Give yourself lots of TLC this weekend!

  6. Excellent to find out about those Senior so-called-breaks. Actually, Seniors have worked their lives and are still doing so, and are entitled to those, which help.

Wishes for a nice, restful weekend!

  7. Each Woman/Sister here has penned exactly my sentiments so I'll say A"HO!!!

    Enjoy your weekend Love! :)

    Sweet Blissings!

I had you in mind as I was listening to the shootings this morning...hoping you were in a different part of the city for work and not having to stand somewhere stranded until the crime scene is investigated. Quick prayers were going up Sister!!!

  8. take advantage of it all:), have a good weekend

  9. Hi sweet friend.....ahhhh....Medicare.....I know it well.....looks like you are really getting your ducks in row for the big "R" (retirement)....good for you...have a wonderful weekend and I hope you find something delightful during your little shopping adventure.
