Snow

Unbelievable winter we are having here in the city.  The above is a photo I took yesterday morning of our latest round of wintry weather.  Heard on the news that we broke a January record here in New York City...a record that has held since they first began keeping track in 1890....and the month is still not over.  Sorry, but enough is enough.  Just can't take much more of the slipping and sliding.  Possibly another 1 to 3 inches on Saturday, and another storm on its way on Tuesday.

Following are some other photos I took of my neighborhood before I went to work yesterday.  It is so nice to finally have a camera.

(Would you believe that there is a car under there?)

(Or how about this one?)

(Early morning before the sidewalks were shoveled)

(So pretty, isn't it?  Too bad it doesn't stay this way.  By evening all was a dirty, icy mess)

(My backyard bush last year)

(And this year.  Flattened from the heaviness of all the snow.  I wonder if it will survive.)

Snow

White are the far-off plains, and white
The fading forests grow;
The wind dies out along the height,
And denser still the snow,
A gathering weight on roof and tree,
Falls down scarce audibly.

The road before me smooths and fills
Apace, and all about
The fences dwindle, and the hills
Are blotted slowly out;
The naked trees loom spectrally
Into the dim white sky.

The meadows and far-sheeted streams
Lie still without a sound;
Like some soft minister of dreams
The snow-fall hoods me round;
In wood and water, earth and air,
A silence everywhere.

Save when at lonely intervals
Some farmer's sleigh, urged on,
With rustling runners and sharp bells,
Swings by me and is gone;
Or from the empty waste I hear
A sound remote and clear;

The barking of a dog, or call
To cattle, sharply pealed,
Borne echoing from some wayside stall
Or barnyard far a-field;
Then all is silent, and the snow
Falls, settling soft and slow.

The evening deepens, and the gray
Folds closer earth and sky;
The world seems shrouded far away;
Its noises sleep, and I,
As secret as yon buried stream,
Plod dumbly on, and dream.

  2. I do know you are tired of the snow. Who wouldn't be. Wouldn't it be nice if it just snowed on sled and ski hills.

    But there is something about the solitude that happens when it is snowing. There is a separation from the world, an aloneness like no other. And I think it is beautiful.

  3. I think I'm the only person in the Northeast that isn't tired of the snow : ) I still get those butterflies at the first flake.

  4. It adds insult to injury... That the beauty of the snow fall, is so quickly replaced by dirty/icy/etc. -sigh-

    It does you no good, but I do think of you often, in this weather.

    Courage!

    And especially! BE CAREFUL!!!!

    Yes, isn't it fun, fun, fun to have a camera and be able to show surrounding. Instead of just "say" this or that "happened."

    Hugs and ♥'s...
    'Cause Valentine Day is coming!

  6. Dear Mary..
    I'm a fan of winter and snow. Love the stuff. I'm happy we are having an old fashioned winter, but even I'd like for the snow to stop..not for the rest of the winter, but just for a bit. At least until most of the piled up snow melts.
    Be safe out there and happy! xo

  7. Don't envy you at all. We have had more than I like and it's nowhere near as much as what you have had. As a kid I loved the stuff. Not so anymore. I'm ready for the rebirth of Spring. X.

  9. I'm loving the photo's you are able to share with us! :)
    I love winter...and good thing too as I live in Wisconsin, so I guess I'm used to it. I love the way it falls, whether gently or in storm, I love the way it silences noise, and I am not daunted by driving in it even at my age, lol. In fact, when my kids were little we used to load up in the car and go find an empty lot and spin donuts until we grew weary from laughing so hard. Many days were spent playing out in it. I miss them.
    I just want you to be careful! And in your case, I will pray for a repreive from more headed your way. It is supposed to snow here later on and this weekend...let it snow! LOL
    Blessings and Stay Safe Sister Soul!

  11. Yikes.... we have a no street parking ban and in other towns they have one side of the street designated to park on odd/even numbered days from November to April.
    No buried cars.
    Looks like you have the same amount of snow we have here.
    Stay warm and safe. (((hugs)))
