Good Monday morning all. Been so busy with cooking, shopping, and cooking. Haven't had time to keep up here. Did my last minute shopping (forgotten things) on Tuesday and took off Wednesday to begin the cooking. The turkey hubby bought wasn't as large this year but with all the other items I made we had plenty to eat, to send home with the boys, have a leftover dinner, and make my famous turkey soup.
I made turkey and gravy, stuffing, turnips, mashed potatoes, broccoli in garlic and oil, sauteed green beans, gondulas and rice, creamed onions, baked sweet potatoes, orecchiette with white beans and spinach, and seasoned corn.
Hubby, me, Anthony, Jerry, and Tahnee.
Jerry, hubby, me, and Anthony.
It's the first Thanksgiving in 3 years that Anthony has been with us. He was living out in California. I really enjoyed it. Wish the entire family could have been together, but my daughter and her hubby are in the process of moving, and since they both work, they needed this day to do some work on their new place. Still, it would have been nice because I am not sure I can do this next year.
I will be 73
years old in March. I have cooked a huge Thanksgiving dinner since I
was 20 years old. I love it. My kids have special foods I make for them
each year. But I fear that the way things are going this might be my
last year of being able to do this. I
came home in tears the other day after going out there shopping. My
body is in so much pain. Osteoarthritis has touched every part of it. I
think one of the hardest things about growing older is being unable to
continue doing the things we love.
The weather is kind of icky out there this morning, and I decided not to go to the center. I will miss seeing my friends, for sure. It's been since last Tuesday, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.
I know what you mean about wondering if you will have the strength (or ambition) to continue family traditions. I had more than a house load of people for Thanksgiving, and it took me two weeks to get it ready and a few days to recover. However, I do have help, of which I am more than grateful.
ReplyDeleteI loved the cooking, but my body hurts so bad lately. Things that were once fun are now difficult.
DeleteI hear you. And hope you can continue for a while longer. Pain and age are sucky beasts.
ReplyDeleteI do hope that you can get back to the centre soon.
Take care.
I hope I can do next Thanksgiving. Smaller turkey helps out. Used to do a 20 pounder. Can't handle that anymore.
DeleteTurnips yummy. Glad your family came.
ReplyDeleteCoffee is on
Had a wonderful day.
DeleteWell, you put on a magnificent feast, Mary. Sorry to hear that your body is hurting from doing so. Time marches on, alas.
ReplyDeleteDoctor told me 20 years ago that it was only going to get worse for me. He wasn't wrong.
DeleteThat is no fun about the pain!!! Hopefully the arthritis settles down and stops giving you so much grief!!!! Looks like a great thanksgiving!!!
ReplyDeleteI hope if I lose some weight I will go back into remission. We will see.
DeleteSounds like you fixed a feast for Thanksgiving. And, so nice that family could all be together.
ReplyDeleteSo much food. I enjoyed us being together.
DeleteThanksgiving looks and sounds wonderful, so good to see all of your photographs.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to read about your pain … getting older is not easy.
Sending healing thoughts, and hoping the pain eases a little.
All the best Jan
I consider my self so lucky to still be able to do all that I do.knock wood..
ReplyDeleteI am sorry to hear you are in so much pain. I hate that the pain wants to keep you from doing what you love.
ReplyDeleteI love turnips, but haven't had any in forever...I'm the only one that likes it. And last week I saw some at the store that was 1.99 a pound!!! I have never seen it so expensive. MMMM...Arroz con Gondulas something else I haven't had in forever.
Everything you made sounds delish!! I never thought that add the gravy to the turkey soup, might have to try that.
